Two communities mourn loss of firefighter in New Jersey

Berkeley Township, NJ – Officials announced the sudden passing of firefighter Brian Letrent on Wednesday, June 21. The 34-year-old firefighter suffered a heart attack, according to the department. Letrent had participated in a full-scale drill the previous day, which may have contributed to his overexertion and stress.

He worked for The Berkeley Township Sewage Authority.

Joining the Hamilton Township fire department in 2005, Letrent was assigned to Engine 14 and was an esteemed member of the Hamilton Township Professional Firefighters Association Local 84. Colleagues and friends remember him as an empathetic individual who held his family dear. Letrent’s dedication, diligence, and unwavering passion for his work were admired by all who knew him.

Hamilton Township Fire Chief Richard Kraemer expressed his grief over the loss, saying, “Brian was a dedicated firefighter who always put others before himself. He was a great asset to our department and a valued member of our fire family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.”

“It is with a heavy heart that the Berkeley Emergency Response Team announce the untimely passing of our past Lieutenant and Hazmat tech Brian Letrent. Brian served as a member of BERT and the Bayville Station 17 Fire Company. Our thoughts and prays are with his family, friends and fellow brothers during this time. The team has it from here. Arrangements to follow,” The Bayville Fire Department said in a statement.
