CAMBRIDGE, MD – Police in Cambridge have made an arrest after an incident involving a fleeing suspect tossing a handgun during a police pursuit.
On May 11, at around 4:42 p.m., officers from the CPD conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 400 block of Dorchester Ave due to a traffic violation.
As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly fled in the vehicle, disregarding the traffic stop. The pursuit continued onto Cedar St, with officers chasing after the fleeing driver.
While on Cedar St, one of the officers witnessed the occupants of the vehicle discarding a handgun from the moving vehicle. The pursuit persisted, taking the officers through multiple streets until the vehicle eventually pulled over in the 500 block of Clinton St.
At this point, three individuals emerged from the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Fortunately, the officers managed to apprehend the driver, identified as Naail Saadiq Thompson, a 23-year-old resident of Cambridge.
Thompson denied any involvement in the vehicle pursuit, but during the subsequent investigation, officers discovered Thompson’s Maryland Driver’s License in the driver’s door handle, and the vehicle was found to be registered to one of Thompson’s family members.
Thompson was promptly arrested and transported to CPD for processing and further investigation.
Efforts were made to track down the other two suspects using a K9 unit, but unfortunately, the search yielded no results.
Officers recovered the handgun that had been discarded from the vehicle in the 300 block of Cedar St. The firearm was identified as a loaded Smith & Wesson 40 caliber handgun, equipped with an extended magazine containing an additional 27 rounds of ammunition. Thompson had an initial appearance before a Court Commissioner and was subsequently released on $10,000.00 unsecured bond pending further legal proceedings.
