WASHINGTON, DC – A veteran firefighter of the DC Fire Department was fatally shot after a domestic dispute in Charles County on Monday morning.

The victim, 30-year-old Carl Braxton, was found suffering from gunshot wounds near the intersection of Sedgemore Place and Matthews Road.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s office, Braxton had assaulted his girlfriend inside their townhouse before the shooting. The woman was able to escape and seek help from a passerby.

Witnesses said that Braxton walked up to the man, who was walking his dog and threatened him, prompting the man to take out his weapon and shoot Braxton as he continued to approach.

The shooter, who reportedly had a permit to carry a gun, was released pending further investigation. The DC Fire and EMS offered condolences to Braxton’s family and provided assistance to impacted members of the department through its Peer Support Team.

No charges have been filed at this time against the shooter.
