Fairfield, NJ – The Fairfield Police Department has announced the arrest of Cara Agola, a 33-year-old woman from Farmingville, NY, for aggravated assault and driving while intoxicated after being involved in a motor vehicle crash last weekend.
According to the Fairfield Police Department, Corporal David Lagan was monitoring traffic on Route 46 West when he observed a black Ford Escape pass by at a high rate of speed.
As he tried to catch up to the vehicle, it crashed into another vehicle in the construction zone in Montville. Agola was found to be the driver and sole occupant of the car.
Upon arriving at the scene, Corporal Lagan allegedly observed an empty container of White Claw alcohol on the driver’s side floor and detected signs consistent with intoxication from Agola, such as slow, unintelligible speech and confusion.
The crash was so significant that the other driver involved sustained injuries and had to be hospitalized, and Agola’s car caught fire. Corporal Lagan was able to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher kept in his patrol car.
Police said Agola became uncooperative, irate, and physically assaulted both Corporal Lagan and Officer Jayson Sickles on the scene. Agola was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters for processing.
Agola was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, assault by auto, possession of prohibited weapons, possession of drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice. Additionally, she was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to breath testing, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to maintain lane.
Agola refused to complete the standardized field sobriety testing and refused a breathalyzer test. She continued to be uncooperative and irate, and for her safety, she was transported to the hospital for a medical evaluation.
Agola was later released pending a court appearance at the Morris County Courthouse on May 17, 2023.
