MILLSBORO, DE – Delaware State Police arrested 23-year-old Joe L. Smith of Delmar, Delaware, for gun and drug offenses after a traffic stop in Millsboro on Wednesday.

Troopers on patrol observed a white Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Smith, failing to properly signal while turning onto Main Street from Railroad Street. The car was subsequently stopped on nearby Gravel Hill Road.

As the car came to a halt, troopers noticed the front passenger, later identified as Smith, reaching in front of him and towards his side.

Smith then attempted to exit the vehicle but was taken into custody without incident. A computer check revealed that Smith had six active warrants for his arrest, including three felony warrants issued by the Laurel Police Department.

Upon searching Smith, troopers discovered approximately 26 glassine baggies containing suspected heroin and over $9,200 in suspected drug dealing proceeds. Further search of the vehicle revealed a backpack on the front passenger floorboard containing a suppressed handgun, ammunition, an extended magazine, and drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, troopers found approximately 21.34 grams of marijuana stored in the passenger door pocket.

Smith now faces additional charges related to the gun and drug offenses.
