UTICA, NY – Yesterday, at approximately 5:15 a.m., Utica Police units were dispatched to an address on Parkside Court regarding a burglary in progress. Information was received that an unknown male had made entry through a bedroom window while the caller was sleeping, and that the male was still currently in the residence.

Upon the officers’ arrival, they created a perimeter around the house, while others made immediate entry. The occupants were escorted to safety, and while in an upstairs bedroom, an officer located a door that appeared to be ajar. Upon entering this area, he noticed a male attempting to conceal himself. The officer immediately went to arrest the party, and the suspect began to physically resist and fight with the officer. With the assistance of other officers, the suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

The homeowners then began to conduct an overview of any property that may have been stolen, and it was quickly realized that several rings were missing. These rings were then located on the suspect, and positively identified as those being the ones stolen.

Upon identifying this party, it was also learned that he was wanted on at least five other larceny investigations from around the City. The male, Shaun Barner, age 55 of Utica, was then transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Petit Larceny x6.
