Governor Phil Murphy just signed a law that lets him pull the strings on campaign law enforcement.

The controversial law erodes transparency and defangs the state’s independent campaign watchdog.
The law lets Governor Murphy appoint all new members to the Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) without oversight.
And it wipes away $1 million in fines for campaign violations committed by Democrats.
Republicans and civil rights activists argue the law will make it harder to punish campaigns for violations.
Democrats plowed ahead despite brutal headlines.
“Now that the governor has full control over ELEC and can stack the deck, the agency’s reputation as a fair and independent campaign watchdog is in serious jeopardy,” said Senator Anthony M. Bucco (R-25). “People will suspect that every action taken by ELEC is politically motivated.”
