QUEENS, NY – Chad Collie, a 19-year-old resident of Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Far Rockaway, pleaded guilty yesterday to attempted murder in the second degree for the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer during a carjacking incident on February 1, 2022.
On the night of the incident, Collie approached the off-duty officer’s vehicle, which was stopped at a traffic light in the Arverne section of Far Rockaway. Collie demanded the officer exit the car at gunpoint, and after the officer complied, Collie fired three shots, striking the officer once in the shoulder. The officer returned fire but missed Collie, who fled on foot. Uniformed officers in an unmarked vehicle later apprehended Collie.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Toni Cimino indicated that she would sentence Collie to a 19-year prison term at his sentencing on May 30.
The injured officer received medical treatment at a local hospital for the gunshot wound to the shoulder.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the decision, stressing the importance of respect for law enforcement and the need to remove guns from the streets to prevent further violence in a statement to the media today.
