TOMS RIVER, NJ – A Brooklyn man crossing a road near a shul in Toms River was killed on Monday after being struck by a car.

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said that at approximately 8:45 p.m., the Toms River Township Police Department responded to the area of Whitesville Road and Jumping Brook Drive for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle.

Police reported that Howard Dasheff, 67, of Brooklyn, was wearing dark clothing and crossing the road outside a designated crosswalk.

The vehicle, a 2021 Chevrolet Camaro was operated by 22-year-old Scott McIvor, Jr. of Jackson.

“Mr. Dasheff was transported to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Mr. McIvor was not injured, remained on the scene and exhibited no outward signs of impairment,” police reported.

The crash occurred north of where a vehicle crashed into a telephone pole near another shul earlier that morning. A vehicle crashed into a utility pole in the southbound lane of Whitesville Road near the intersection of Jumping Brook Road.

The TRPD did not release any further information regarding that crash.

The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the later fatal crash.
