BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – On Wednesday, Kelvin Stichel, a 37-year-old resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for second-degree attempted murder.
Stichel pleaded guilty to opening fire on four New York City Police Officers, one of whom he wounded in the leg, in 2018.
According to the Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, Stichel fired six shots at the officers, which could have killed them. The officers recognized Stichel from an investigation card for an alleged armed robbery when they saw him walking on the sidewalk on Fulton Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Stichel fled the scene upon seeing the officers making a U-turn, turning onto Tompkins Avenue and then Decatur Street, leading to a car and foot chase. During the pursuit, Stichel pulled out a .45-caliber handgun, fired six times at the officers, and struck Detective Miguel Soto in the right leg.
Stichel was apprehended later at 39 Kingston Street.
The .45-caliber handgun used in the shooting was recovered from a trashcan in front of a nearby building. Detective Soto, a decorated, seven-year-veteran of the NYPD, was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was treated and released.
