BEAR, DE – Two teens have been arrested in connection with a botched carjacking outside LA Fitness in Bear.
Kymani Roberts, 18, of Middletown, Delaware, and a 17-year-old male were arrested Friday morning after an attempted carjacking was reported to 911 in Bear.
As a result of a reported attempted carjacking, troopers responded to the LA Fitness located at 900 Eden Circle at approximately 9:43 a.m.
Troopers responded to the location and located the victim, a 48-year-old man from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
The victim told officers that several individuals approached him as he sat in his locked car. As one of the subjects attempted to enter the back seat of his car, another stood at the driver’s door and pointed a handgun at him, demanding that he get out and give him the keys. The victim complied and entered LA Fitness to report the incident.
The suspects could not reverse the victim’s car properly out of the parking space. They fled the scene in a Honda Accord traveling eastbound on Pulaski Highway after leaving the car in the parking lot. Troopers saw the Honda nearby and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled.
Police pursued the car until it crashed on East 4th Street near Swedes Landing in Wilmington. After the crash, Kymani Roberts attempted to escape. However, he was arrested without incident. An airsoft gun that resembled a handgun was found in the Accord, and it was taken into custody.
The second suspect in the carjacking, a 17-year-old male from New Castle, Delaware, was also detained on New Castle Avenue shortly thereafter.
