SEWICKLEY BOROUGH, PA – Two children were killed in an early morning fire at a home in Sewickley Township. Allegheny County Police Department homicide detectives are now investigating.
According to police, a house fire was reported at approximately 2:44 am Tuesday morning.
Upon arrival at the scene, first responders reported a working structure fire in the 500 block of Miller Way.
One adult occupant was able to escape the fully engulfed home, but two children remained inside. The adult was able to jump from a second-story porch. They were treated for minor injuries at the hospital.
Firefighters rescued the two juvenile victims, but both were pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation has been initiated by Homicide Detectives and the Allegheny County Fire Marshals Office.
The children were students at the Quaker Valley School District. Today, the district said it would have staff on hand to deal with questions from students regarding the incident.
“It is with profound sadness and deep regret that I inform you of the passing of two children in our community in a house fire overnight,” said Tammy A. Andreyko, Ed.D., superintendent of schools. “We are working this morning to assist our staff as they learn of and process this tragedy. While we do not have official details regarding this incident, we will address student questions should they arise.”
District counselors and psychologists are present at all the district’s buildings to assist the students and staff in coping with the loss, and they will continue to be available as needed.
“Please do not hesitate to contact the staff at your child’s school if you have any concerns regarding your child’s reaction to this news,” she added.
