ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Police in Atlantic City eventually captured their man, but not without incident.

A wanted Atlantic City man was arrested on Friday after barricading himself in an apartment bedroom and fleeing from police by descending the fire escape.

According to police, a domestic disturbance was reported in the first block of south Iowa Avenue around 8:00 AM by patrol units. The victim was contacted by Lieutenant Kevin Fair and Officer Michelle Cardani when they arrived at the fourth-floor apartment. Corey Cornish, the suspect, was observed inside the apartment. Cornish retreated into a bedroom while the officers spoke with the victim. Cornish then barricaded himself inside the bedroom by sliding furniture to block the door.

Responding units immediately set up a perimeter around the apartment building after receiving this information. Cornish was observed climbing down the fire escape before officers lost sight of him as officers were getting into position.

An Emergency Response Team from the Atlantic City Police Department, including SWAT, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Mobile Command Post, was activated and responded to the incident. About 40 minutes later, officers discovered Cornish hiding under a mattress in an alleyway on the south side of the building. Eventually, Cornish was arrested without incident.
