CUMBERLAND, MD – it has been over 100 years since Cumberland police officer August Baker was killed on duty while trying to make an arrest back in 1907. On Friday, the Cumberland Police Department held a memorial service for officer Baker after a new grave marker was installed in his honor at his cemetery plot.
The new Grave marker was paid for by donations through a fundraiser held by the Cumberland Police Department, and with the assistance of the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization.
“The Cumberland Police Department would like to express our gratitude to our community for the support that allowed this ceremony to take place,” the department said. “On October 7th, 1907 the Cumberland Police Department lost its first Officer in the Line of Duty, August Baker.”
Officer Baker was shot while effecting an arrest of a suspect on October 5th, 1907, and died two days later after surgery.
The Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization located the grave of Officer Baker and through the support of several donors, purchased a new grave marker
