SYRACUSE, NY – A 28-year-old mother’s quick response and instincts led to the swift arrest of a man suspected of attempting to lure her ten-year-old daughter and Syracuse.
According to police, on Monday at around 8:19 a.m., police responded to a suspicious person complaint on Erie Boulevard. Once at the scene, police questioned Gary Shultz, 21, for an alleged attempted luring of a child.
The Syracuse Police Department said that a 20-year-old mother called 911 after Schultz exhibited suspicious Behavior around her daughter while she was waiting for her school bus.
“As the daughter was waiting to get on a school bus, Shultz approached the child and had a conversation expressing a sexual act and wanting to go to an excluded area,” the Syracuse Police Department said. “The mother noticed the conversation taking place and quickly intervened. Shultz tried to flee, and the mother followed until police were able to detain the suspect on Erie Blvd. In the end, Shultz was arrested and booked for Patronizing a Person for Prostitution, Attempted Luring a Child, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.”
Police also credited the child in this incident for realizing the threat she faced.
“We would like to recognize the child in this case for knowing to say no to a stranger and the parent keeping close watch. This case serves as an important reminder that, although rare, predators are out there. Have the conversation with your children about “stranger danger” and never agreeing to leave with someone they don’t know. As always, call 911 in any case where someone tries to lure you away,” the department said.
