NEWARK, NJ – Operations at Newark Liberty International Airport were shut down for hours on Sunday as federal authorities investigated a suspicious package that was abandoned Inside a bathroom with in the airport.
According to police, investigators focused on a bathroom on the first level of the airport after a suspicious unattended item was left inside Terminal C.
Federal authorities evacuated the first level of the airport and some flights were temporarily delayed.
The Essex County bomb squad responded along with a sheriff’s K-9 unit to investigate the package. Hours later, the airport was reopened. Detectives are continuing their investigation to see who left the package and why.
At this time police have not said what was contained within the package or whether or not it was a live explosive or caused any immediate threat to passengers.
