Fugitive Wanted for Newark Shooting Arrested

NEWARK, NJ – A fugitive wanted for a shooting that took place in May was arrested this week. Interim Newark Public Safety Director Raul Malave reports the arrest of Alfuquan Huey, 25, of Newark, who was being sought for a shooting that occurred on May 25, 2022.

“I vigorously commend each detective involved in the apprehension of this individual, who was wanted for recklessly shooting another man inside a residential building,” Interim Director Malave said. “I am pleased that our police officers are fully committed to locating violent offenders for the singular purpose of safeguarding our residents and visitors.”

According to police, “At approximately 8 a.m., officers responded to a residential building in the 100 block of 1st Street on a call of a shooting. A male suspect shot another man inside the building following a fight between the two individuals. Responding officers applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg, where he sustained the gunshot wound, to limit the profuse bleeding. The victim was transported to University Hospital for further treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.”

During the investigation, police recovered two .40 caliber spent shell casings at the location. Detectives investigating this incident identified Huey as a suspect and successfully obtained a warrant for his arrest. Members of the Newark Fugitive Apprehension Team located and arrested Huey on Broad Street on June 8, 2022. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

“Senseless gun violence will not be allowed to go on unchecked in Newark,” Interim Director Malave said. “People who blatantly commit shootings will be quickly apprehended and brought to justice. I am grateful that our concerned citizens are increasingly coming forward to report those they see with guns on our streets. Police and community members working together to keep Newark safe is a winning formula,” he added.
