Newark Police Identify Wanted Suspects in Two Recent Shootings

NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Police Department is investigating two separate shooting incidents and have released the names and photos of two suspects who were wanted for those shootings. They are now in police custody.

Interim Newark Public Safety Director Raul Malave reports the arrest of Anthony Moultrie, 43, and Alkabir Hinton, 28, both of Newark, who were each being sought for separate recent shooting incidents.

“I commend the members of our Shooting Response Team for their unwavering commitment to investigating these incidents until each suspect involved could be apprehended,” Interim Director Malave said.

According to police, Moultrie was arrested in connection with a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard on April 19. A male victim driving in the area reported that his vehicle had been struck by gunfire. The victim was not injured.

“Detectives investigating this incident recovered two .40 caliber spent shell casings at the location and damage to the victim’s vehicle due to gunfire. With the help of a concerned citizen, who provided a Crime Stoppers tip, detectives identified Moultrie as a suspect in this incident and successfully obtained a warrant for his arrest,” according to a report issued by the department. “Moultrie was apprehended on June 8 and faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession.”

Direct Malave said Hinton was arrested for a shooting that occurred on May 22 at Avon Avenue and South 19th Street. Police responded to the area on a Shot Spotter notification and recovered 21 .9mm spent shell casings at the scene. Newark Police Shooting Response Team members identified Hinton as a suspect in this shooting and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Hinton was also wanted on a federal warrant.

“The Shooting Response Team, in partnership with members of the Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force, arrested Hinton at 3rd Avenue and Mt. Pleasant Avenue. He faces charges of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, criminal mischief, and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession,” a police report by Malave stated.
