WOODBURY, NJ – Police investigated reported threats against this weekend’s past St. Margaret’s Carnival. The carnival was held Friday and Saturday but was marred by alleged threats of violence made against the event.
“SMRS Carnival Committee and Administration are aware of the threat of violence made on social media which was planned for tonight and tomorrow at the St. Margaret Carnival,” the carnival organizers said on Friday. “The situation was immediately brought to the attention of local law enforcement yesterday afternoon. At this time, local law enforcement officers have taken steps to ensure that the threat is not credible.”
The Woodbury Heights and Woodbury City Police Departments were aware of potential threats of violence at the St. Margaret’s Carnival but said there were multiple inaccurate rumors on social media stemming from the original report.
“We have investigated these threats and identified the persons responsible for them and have determined that they are not credible,” police said.
In an abundance of caution, the department increased police presence for the remaining days of the carnival. The carnival was successful, without any incidents.
Police did not say what, if any charges were filed against the person who started the rumor, nor did they identify any suspects in the incident.
