UTICA, NY – The Utica Police Department has reported an apartment building dispute turned violent when a man pulled a gun and began shooting through his neighbor’s door.
“On April 24th, 2022 at approximately 6:00PM Utica Police units were dispatched a residence on the 900 block of Elizabeth St regarding a shots fired incident,” police said. “Upon arrival they were met by a party who stated they were arriving home, and as they were doing so another tenant in the building began yelling at them. This party stated that as the argument escalated the suspect brandished a handgun and fired two shots through the door attempting to shoot the victim.”
Upon the first Patrol units arriving, they established a perimeter and began to attempt to raise the suspect who resided on the first floor. After some time, Darnell Carter age 33 of Utica, exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident.
“Following his arrest members of the Criminal Investigation Division and Major Crimes Unit applied for and were granted a search warrant for Carter’s apartment. During the execution of the warrant spent shell casings, live ammunition, and a loaded 9mm Taurus handgun were located,” the department added.
Carter was charged with Attempted Assault in the first degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the second degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree, and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.
