Camden says farewell to chief of detectives upon retirement

Camden, N.J. (CCPO NEWS)  – Jeffrey S. Dunlap, Chief of Detectives at the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, is retiring, effective October 1st, announced Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer.

Dunlap’s career in law enforcement began in 1994 in Burlington County, where he served as a Patrol Officer with the Palmyra Police Department. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1999. It was during this tenure, Dunlap says he decided he wanted to join the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.

In April of 2001, Dunlap was hired as a Detective at the CCPO, serving in the Grandy Jury, Narcotics, and Major Crimes Units. He was also assigned to the FBI Violent Crime Task Force.

Dunlap was promoted to Sergeant in November of 2013. Over the next four years, he supervised the Juvenile, Major Crimes, Special Victims, and Homicide Units. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October of 2017, and he served as the commanding officer of the Major Crimes, Homeland Security, and Special Victims Units.

In September of 2018, Dunlap was promoted to Captain.  As a Captain, he supervised the Major Crimes, Homeland Security, Special Victims, and Crime Scene Units.

Dunlap was promoted to Acting Chief in August 2019.  He was appointed permanent Chief in April of 2020.

“As Chief, he helped guide this office through unprecedented times – never allowing our high standards to falter.” said Mayer. “Nothing could have prepared us for what came in 2020 and 2021, but despite it all, our office pulled together and shined.  Much of that is due to his integrity and thoughtful leadership.”

Current Captains at the CCPO, who have known Dunlap for years, describe him as an extremely hard worker who has been very dedicated to his job and who has always had a strong desire to better the office and the community.

“To me, one of his most notable endeavors as Chief, was pushing forward and formalizing a more robust Officer Wellness Program to promote mental health and resiliency for the investigative staff,” added Mayer. “Chief Dunlap cared very deeply for those with whom he worked.  He has had an extraordinary career and it’s been my honor and pleasure to serve as Acting Prosecutor with him.”

Outside of law enforcement, Dunlap enjoys volunteering with youth sports organizations in South Jersey. He says what he’s most looking forward to in retirement is spending more time with his family.

Chief Dunlap certainly will be missed.  However, through his extraordinary leadership, the CCPO is now better and stronger than when he joined the office.  He has left a lasting impression on those victims, victim survivors, and co-workers.  “Through his nearly three decades in law enforcement, Chief Dunlap exemplifies what it means to be a true public servant.  We wish him all the best,” said Mayer.
