NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Director Anthony A. Caputo of the New Brunswick Police Department announced today that a City man has been arrested and charged in connection with a non-fatal stabbing.
On September 26, 2021, at approximately 11:50 P.M., authorities responded to the area of French Street between Harvey Street and Prospect Street following the report of a stabbing. Upon their arrival, officers located a male who had sustained multiple stab wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
An investigation by Detective William Coleman of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Ryan Tighe of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined Santos Montoya, 29, of New Brunswick stabbed the victim with a knife that was recovered at the scene.
Montoya was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree aggravated assault, and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Montoya is detained pending a pre-trial detention hearing in Superior Court.
At present, the stabbing does not appear to be a random act. The investigation is active and continuing. As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Montoya are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
