Paterson murderer caught with gun, heroin

PATERSON, NJ – Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Ibrahim Baycora
announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction
with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Dazhier Huggins, 20-years-old from Paterson, New
Jersey, was arrested in relation to a shooting investigation that took place July 20, 2021, in the
area of Carroll Street and Harrison Street in Paterson, New Jersey.

Dazhier Huggins is charged
with Attempted Murder, First Degree; Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; and
Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree.


Additionally, Dazhier Huggins is charged with the following charges in relation to his July 22,
2021 arrest: Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of CDS (Heroin),
Third Degree; Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute (heroin), First Degree; Possession of
CDS (heroin) with Intent to Distribute within 1,000 Feet of School Property, Third Degree;
Possession of CDS (heroin) with Intent to Distribute within 500 Feet of Public Property, Second
Degree, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Narcotics Offense, Second Degree;
and Resisting Arrest, Fourth Degree.


On July 20, 2021, at approximately 11:40 p.m. members of the Paterson Police Department were
dispatched to the area of Carroll Street and Harrison Street in Paterson, New Jersey on a report of
shots fired. Upon arrival, police located a potential crime scene and a 19-year-old male Paterson
resident who had sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound.

The victim was immediately transported
to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, New Jersey for treatment. Based upon
the investigation, it was determined that the victim was standing in the area of Carroll Street and
Harrison Street when he was struck by gunfire.


Dazhier Huggins was identified as a suspect in the shooting. Members of the Paterson Police
Department arrested him on July 22, 2021 at approximately 1:52 p.m. after a brief foot pursuit in
the area of Lafayette Street and Mercer Street in Paterson. At the time of his arrest, Dazhier
Huggins was in possession of a 9 millimeter handgun and 10 bricks of suspected heroin.
