Lakewood – One of the area’s most enjoyed pizzeria’s Knockout Pizza in Lakewood was damaged in a fire on Chambers Bridge Road’s Clock Tower Plaza.

The fire was reported to police by a witness and firefighters said a sprinkler system had engaged prior to their arrival.

“Shortly after 4 am the Lakewood Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke condition in the area of 60 Chambers Bridge Rd,” Lakewood Professional Firefighters FMBA reported. “Upon arrival, a General alarm was transmitted. Crews encountered heavy smoke from a 200 x 75 1 story commercial building.”

Firefighters said the fire was a difficult one to attack because it spread to the rafters inside the roof structure.

“Crews secured a water supply via 450 feet of 3.5 inch hose and stretched 250 feet of 2.5 inch hose due to the unknown location of the fire,” the FMBA said.

Crews forced entry to the pizza restaurant and found heavy smoke but no heat.

Upon entering the liquor store, they encountered smoke, heat, and the sound of a sprinkler head flowing.

“The maze-like conditions required a joint effort of multiple engine companies to perform the stretch. In a rear storage room, they encountered heavy fire and smoke,” the FMBA added. “It was knocked down pretty quickly. But due to the building construction being a type 2 noncombustible and the high heat, trucks encountered an advanced roof deck fire.”

Firefighters had to cut through the roof deck with saws to attack the hot spots.

“Extra saws and fuel will definitely be needed. Also the NY roof hook is the best tool for stripping the insulation. After hours of cutting and exposing the combustible roof deck, the fire was listed under control,” the FMBA said.
