A Toms River woman has been charged with assaulting a police officer after she allegedly punched and spit on a Lacey Township police officer during a traffic stop.

Laura Metzger, 35, was observed in a stationary vehicle on Manchester Avenue with both passenger side tires up on the curb when police first approached the scene. Metzger was reportedly found slumped over in the driver seat.

After determining that Metzger had been operating a vehicle under the influence, she was arrested and transported to Lacey Township Police headquarters where she was processed and charged with DUI and reckless driving.

Just before 2 a.m., as Metzger was being processed for release, she began to spit and was described by police as disruptive. She then began to act increasingly aggressive toward the officer and refused to cooperate after repeated requests.

Officer Keefe was struck in his face with a closed fist by the subject, who also reportedly spit in the officer’s face.

She was charged with throwing bodily fluid on a police officer and aggravated assault on a police officer. Bail was set at $10,000. She was later transported to the Ocean County Correctional Facility.
