National Marine Corps Museum Closed Due to Federal Shutdown

The National Museum of the Marine Corps has been temporarily closed due to the “Schumer Shutdown” in Washington, D.C.

Museum officials alerted their fans this weekend.

“The National Museum of the Marine Corps is temporarily CLOSED and will reopen as soon as the Federal budget is approved,” the museum posted on Facebook.  “We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.”

“We’ve had many questions about why the National Museum of the Marine Corps is closed during the government shutdown since many people believe the Museum is privately funded by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation. The NMMC is actually funded and operated by the federal government and falls under the command of the Marine Corps University,” officials continued.  “However, the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation is very important to the Museum. Funds raised by the Foundation built the Museum and they continue raising funds to support the Museum and to complete the Heritage Center. Everything inside the Museum, as well as the preservation of other artifacts, is paid for with federal funds. The NMMC preserves and exhibits the material history of the U.S. Marine Corps to, in part, educate society about the role the Corps (and military in general) plays in defending and preserving democracy during times of both war and peace. We hope this helps explain a little more how the relationship works.”
