WASHINGTON-New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez today lashed out at President Donald Trump for lowering the refugee cap to 30,000 annually. Trump’s order marks the lowest annually refugee admission figure on record in the United States.
The 2019 figure is 15,000 lower than the 2018 cap and 100,000 less than the administration of former President Barack Obama.
Today, Menendez, who narrowly skirted a jail sentence and political corruption conviction this year said he wants more refugees coming to America.
“Truly repugnant to see the Trump Administration double down on rejecting our foundational values, and drastically decrease the number of refugees we accept,” Menendez said. “This policy rejects our humanitarian duty of providing those escaping persecution the opportunity to seek protection and safe haven.”
Menendez’s ally, Senator Cory “Spartacus” Booker rallied around the cry of “30,000”, declaring the cuts to the foreign refugee influx as “Un-American”.
“Our nation is a beacon of hope for refugees fleeing terrible conditions with dreams for a better life. What the Trump Administration is doing – systematically crippling the American refugee program – is deeply wrong and un-American to the core,” Booker said.
Booker this week is facing heat over a 1992 admission that he took advantage of a 15 year old drunk girl in his high school days.
Both Booker and Menendez have routinely supported the concept of sanctuary cities in America that protect illegal immigrants and asylum seekers from legal and criminal actions by the federal government.
