NJ 101.5’s Dennis and Judi Suspended After Calling AG “Turban Man”

TRENTON-New Jersey talk radio hosts Dennis Malloy and Judi Franco have been indefinitely taken off the air by New Jersey 101.5.

After referring to New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal as “Turban Man”, the station took action.

“You know the attorney general, I’m never going to know his name, I’m just going to say the guy with the turban,” Malloy said.

“Turban Ma’an!” Franco explained.

“Look if it offends you, don’t wear the turban and I’ll remember your name,” Malloy added.

Malloy asked Franco if she felt the name Turban Man was highly offensive.

“To me, no,” she said. “To people who wear turbans, could be.”

“If you called me baseball hat man and I was in a culture where nobody wore baseball hats and they called me baseball hat man, should I be offended?” Malloy asked.

“My name, for the record, is Gurbir Grewal. I’m the 61st Attorney General of NJ,” Grewal said. “I’m a Sikh American. I have 3 daughters. And yesterday, I told them to turn off the radio.”

Malloy went on to report that “Turban Man” was not going prosecute marijuana related offenses.

Grewal speaks often about religious insensitivities in the Garden State and said it is something he faced regularly in life.

“This is not the first indignity I’ve faced and it probably won’t be the last,” Grewal said. “Sometimes, I endure it alone. Yesterday, all of New Jersey heard it. It’s time to end small-minded intolerance.”

That Is The Beauty of America

Thank you to Governor Phil Murphy, Steve Sweeney, Cory Booker, Ravi Bhalla, Mayor of Hoboken and so many others for your support last night. You’ve got my back – and the backs of all New Jerseyans. Others have faced far worse. We rise above this. Now let’s get back to business.

“We are aware of the offensive comments made by Dennis and Judi during Wednesday’s broadcast,” NJ101.5 said in a statement.  “We have taken immediate action and have taken them off the air until further notice. We are investigating the matter and will have further comment shortly.”

Grewal is the nation’s first Sikh attorney general.
