TOMS RIVER-On Thursday the Toms River Police Department received a boating call for assistance from a family off Shelter Cove Beach.

“Everyone on the boat was okay but there were two young girls aboard who were very upset,” the department said in a prepared statement. “Officer John Mehl jumped in the water and walked out to the boat as it coasted toward shore.”

Police said he comforted the two crying girls while waiting for our Marine 1 Unit with Lt. Michael Miller, Officer Thomas Herbst and Officer Graham Borg to arrive and assist them.
