TOMS RIVER-Heading into the 2019 Republican primary election, Toms River Councilman Maurice “Mo” Hill has secured the endorsement of the township’s growing Orthodox Community. Members of the Orthodox Jewish Council of Toms River endorsed Hill and another group had provided him with the final two pages of signatures required to get his campaign placed on Tuesday’s election ballot.
Hill had previously come under attack by Scott Gartner, an Orthodox Jewish resident who has been fighting town hall to build the township’s first Orthodox Jewish Synagogue. Now, Gartner has apparently signaled his endorsement of Hill by signing his election petition. Nearly 20% of Hill’s petition signers were from the Orthodox community, signaling the coveted bloc vote as leaning in his favor.
Hill’s endorsement could signify the bridge necessary connect the two communities should he win the November general election.
Walter G. LaCicero, mayor of the Borough of Lavallette, announced his endorsement of former Democrat Daniel Rodrick for Mayor.
While Hill and Rodrick nailed down community endorsements, former Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato secured the endorsement of the Toms River Republican Club and the Ocean County Republican Committee.
